San Diego in a Day
Mural Artist: Ian Stiles-Mikl
July 2024
In partnership with Delawie Architecture and Interior Design and participants from the San Diego Rescue Mission and IIDA SoCal, ArtReach created this 80’+ wide mural on the rooftop playground and family area. Based on input from residents who live at the San Diego Rescue Mission, Lead Artist, Ian Stiles-Mikl created this mural to reflect hope and the overcoming of hardships.
This design features the regions of our beautiful city of San Diego through natural landscapes. From left to right it starts with the coastal ocean, continues to the ridges and peaks of the local mountain ranges, and ends with the sunrise in the desert, which reflects as one SDRM resident pointed out, “San Diego in a Day”. The agave and prickly pear cactus represent the resilience of SDRM residents, who like the cacti, can and have wisthanded challenging environments. The doves flying together shows unity, friendship, community, and faith. Overall, as the mural scene shifts from night to day- folks can physically walk the length of the mural and witness the transition as they traverse, reminding all that there are always brighter days ahead, no matter how dark the nights have felt.
Thank you to Sherwin WIlliams for the paint donation for this project and to all of the residents and members of IIDA who helped paint this space.
