We Flourish in Community
Mural Artist: Josué Baltézar
October 2024
This mural, designed by ArtReach Mural Artist Partner, Josué Baltézar in collaboration with the sixth grade class of Lilian J. Rice Elementary, celebrates Chula Vista’s rich natural landscape and the multicultural spirit of the community. This dynamic piece features Rice Elementary’s roadrunner mascot against a backdrop of the sun and mountains, a reference to the city’s iconic logo. In addition to the road runner, which has kelp and agave imagery within its features, one can see local flora and fauna, including a monarch butterfly, fish swimming in kelp, and hummingbirds. Together, these elements symbolize diversity, migration, resilience, and the strength of community, reflecting how individuals are supported by and connected to their environment. Funded by the City of Chula Vista’s Performing and Visual Arts Grant, this project not only highlights the school’s identity but also captures the contagious energy and pride of the over 90 students who contributed their artistic talents, encouraging us all to uplift one another.
