Process of Change
Mural Artist: Regan Russell and Elisa C.
June 2024
“I hope that people can see from the mural that change is going on- either from inside or outside the community-that there is hope. It symbolizes change- going through brokenness to togetherness, to always know there is always going to be change, to never give up, no matter how down you are, no matter what position you are, whatever the situation is, there is always hope for change and growth.” – Elisa, Lead Student Artist with David’s Harp Foundation
This mural was created in collaboration with David’s Harp Foundation for the entrance to their incredible space. Designed by ArtReach Mural Artist Partner, Regan Russell, this mural features imagery inspired by David’s Harp lead student artist, Elisa. The design process was truly collaborative, with Elisa providing the creative inspiration and ideas seen in the design, and Regan interpreting and rendering it. The overarching theme pays tribute to Elisa’s story, which is one of transformation and growth. From left to right, the imagery shifts from broken music notes, a broken wall and cooler colors to complete music notes, a clean brick wall, and warmer colors. This echoes the journey that many David’s Harp students go through as they attend classes, receive mentorship, and begin a new chapter of their lives.
Because David’s Harp is a center for youth to learn about video production from professional mentors, every part of the mural making process, from workshops to paint days was incredibly well documented by students and staff using professional-grade cameras and equipment. This was something that we at ArtReach had never experienced before, and it added such a new and exciting layer to the process, as we got to watch and work with these highly gifted and hard working students as they honed their craft.
This project was made possible by the generous support of the Tah Dah Foundation, Gensler San Diego, and Reed Charitable Foundation.
